I think that the real thing lurking behind your comments isn't Survival Vs Equity, but Money EV VS Chip EV. Personally I think that, in MTTs especially, the situations where chip EV and money EV substantially diverge are really quite rare, and it's usually when the prizes on offer for the next few places jump quite a lot.
